This event has ended.

Pigeonhole is a large-scale installation in DAC comprised of thousands of cardboard boxes. It is the most ambitious project to date from artists Reina Kubota and Hang Xu.

The term “pigeonholing” refers to the classification process by which we group disparate entities. Often, we do this by stereotyping and ignoring contradictory elements in order to simplify complex concepts. This can have far reaching effects on our perception of people, including a detrimental effect on our own identity. The self-delusion people create by pigeonholing themselves into graspable categories underlies our obsession with self-identification. The conflict of who we truly are versus who we want to be can be irreconcilable forming the motivation behind many of our actions.

The wayward aspect of a maze is parallel to the loss of self-identity in self-delusion. The end of the maze provokes the question of who we truly are. At the same time, it plays a small part in the process of reconciling our identities.

Reina Kubota received her MFA from Aichi Prefectural University of Arts and Music. Her most recent solo exhibition Hello? . .. Yes? was exhibited at ISE Cultural Foundation in New York.
