Gana Art presents an exhibition by Korean artist Sun-Tai Yoo, on view in the gallery's second floor viewing space. Comprised of seven works on canvas, this is the artist's debut exhibition in the U.S.
Sun-Tai Yoo's recent paintings on view depict otherworldly landscapes formed by interwoven objects that are rich in metaphor. While concretely portraying the shapes of richly colored objects such as books, apples, paintings, chairs , vases and even musical notes, Yoo conveys their latent and mult-faceted meaning – that of meditation, reflection, honesty, prayer, eternity, hope, nostalgia, light and affection.
Henri Francois Debailleux wrote of Yoo's work: "His works tell stories that take place between colors and light, material and immaterial, tangible and intangible. Where the spirit leaves reality to find equilibrium in its own world. Sun-Tae Yoo enjoys arousing resonance and accents, which are reminiscent of music…to create a scene that has echoes and correspondence."
An intuitive painter, Yoo strives to transcend mere representation by tapping into our deeper emotional connections to these objects and what they have come to symbolize. An apple can symbolizes the fall of humanity while the book represents learning. By presenting these objects within his dream-like settings, away from what he describes as a "sea of words" that surrounds us, Yoo asks us to meditate and take part by projecting ourselves into his world of sights and sounds.
Sun-Tai Yoo received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Hong-Ik University in Seoul and studied at Paris 8 University and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Art in Paris. He has held solo exhibitions at Duru Artspace and Seoul Arts Center, Seoul; Gallery Lavignes-Bastille, Paris; Gallery Joanna Kustmann, Spain and Vera Van Laer Gallery, Belgium, among other venues. His work is in the collection of Art Sonje Center and Walker Hill Art Museum, Seoul and George Pompidou Center, Paris.
