This event has ended.

Onishi Gallery presents Fusako Kuyama in a solo show, Art of Integration, an exhibition of 10 new works. Each stunning work is comprised of four square-shaped panels that form visual relationships that are deeply enjoyable for Kuyama’s viewers to observe. This is Kuyama’s second solo show in New York, following her show at the Nippon Club in July, 2009.

Kuyama frequently depicts aspects of nature that inspire her, from air, water, and trees to the unseen things that surround us. Color is a central part of Kuyama’s art as she creates layers of transparent watercolors on paper that generate deep hues. Kuyama’s skilled use of asymmetry, positive and negative space, and the interplay between lines and planes make her work full of movement.

As the art critic Alicia Haber has said, “Fusako Kuyama lets the brush stroke take its way and lets it flow without directing it, generating powerful abstract areas.” Her resulting collages are vividly dynamic and full of expressive trust in the art process.

Kuyama’s work is rooted in traditional Japanese art techniques and inspired by Japanese artists from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, as well as radiates a modern Western sensibility. She has spoken of the “Japanese sensitivity” that frames her work, and it can be seen in her remarkable methods of revealing the true essence of her subjects.
