Marvelli Gallery presents City Diary, the second exhibition at the gallery of important Swedish photographer Anders Petersen.

In 1978, the publication of Cafe Lehmitz revealed the name of a young Swedish documentary photographer: Anders Petersen. This book - which quickly became a cult title - chronicles the everyday life of the unemployed, sailors and prostitutes in a bar in the red light district of Hamburg. Over the course of two years, Petersen portrayed without any voyeurism, and with great tenderness and immediacy, the clientele of the bar at the very moment when they are exposed and vulnerable. he says: "To me, Lehmitz was the symbol of human warmth and contact". The book is now widely considered a seminal work in the development of Eupopean photography.

In recent years, Anders Petersen's work has developed increasingly into a a diary. With anger, tenderness and despair, as well as a tireless vitality, Anders Petersen confronts us with the state of the world of today. More unequivocally than ever his photographs reveal his close proximity to people, his hypnotic intimacy with them. 'It is less a case of a photographer taking pictures of life than of a human being documenting his experience of being, of being-with-others, in photographs full of intimate, passionate humanism, direct, honest and merciless. Anders Petersen's work belongs in the ranks of Ed van Elsken, Daido Moriyama and Nan Goldin"(Urs Stahel).
