This event has ended.

James Graham & Sons announces an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Max Jansons. The show titled Love is Jansons' first solo exhibition with the gallery and will be comprised of oil paintings and line drawings.

Jansons' intimate canvases reference the work of such seminal American painters as Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley or Helen Torr. Like those painters Jansons finds inspiration in the ordinary. Meaningful objects we encounter in daily life such as a plant, a matchbook, or a bathing suit top are the focus of each canvas. As Jansons describes his painting process, "I often paint the things around me. These objects or things that serve as the basis for my reflections can be something as humble as a teapot, a cloud of smog, a graphic matchbook, a potted plant, or a vase made by my wife…. I like my paintings to feel almost familiar, much in the way things feel in a dream. Despite the inanimate nature of the things I paint, I strive to create in the paintings feelings of compassion and empathy, to have them reflect a sense of humanity. I feel that something special can be discovered in even the smallest and most inconsequential of things…. I look to capture the intimate nature of the expansive and the expansive nature of the intimate.... I want my paintings to spark a giving relationship with the person that looks at them. To have them be permeated by "LOVE" for the subtle nature and pleasure of visual experience."

Born in New York City, Max Jansons now lives and works in Santa Monica, California. Jansons holds an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA from UCLA. He has exhibited at the Wooster Arts Space in New York, Christopher Grimes Gallery in Santa Monica and in numerous group shows. Jansons' work has been reviewed in the Los Angeles Times and Artforum.
