Onishi Gallery presents an exhibition of Kaburaki Wine Glasses. Also, including is a showing of several plates and vases by Yasokichi Tokuda, one of a unique group of artisans whom Japan has designated as Living National Treasures. The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Both art forms are made embodying Kutani porcelain, a special technique used in Japan for centuries.

Kaburaki Wine Glasses beautifully marry Japanese traditional aesthetics with solid German craftsmanship, resulting in stemware that is unsurpassed in originality. Kaburaki of Japan and Spiegelau of Germany have collaborated to make Kaburaki original wine glasses, seamlessly fusing the artistic tastes of two very different cultures. The series of unique glasses were created by melding the European wine arts and culture with the multicolored, over glaze painting of Kutani technique. The glass bowl is by Spiegelau, the world famous German crystal glass factory, and the stem by Kutani porcelain, which possesses rich historical importance dating back 370 years of artisanal craft in Kanazawa, Japan.

Spiegelau creates glass bowls that are rational, streamlined, and graceful, which uniquely juxtaposes with the stem of Kutani porcelain. Kutani porcelain, traditionally famous for it’s colorful painting, uses gorgeous golds, blues, and reds, as well as other traditional Japanese colors. There are various choices from authentic designs to contemporary tastes and all stems are authentically hand painted by artisans. There are five types of glass bowls for wine and two for champagne, along with a variety of different stems to choose from. The connection of the bowl and stem is a patented technique and won the Good Design Frontier Design Award in 2006.
