This event has ended.

Donna Moylan’s third show with Michael Steinberg Fine Art is both a continuation and a deepening of her exploration of the landscape. Imagined, invented, and inspired, sometimes populated and sometimes desolately devoid of human life, Moylan’s new works hover in the uncanny domain between the remembered and the repressed. The range in scale, from an almost medieval miniature to a near baroque grandeur, formally transmits the artist’s dual concern with microcosmic and macrocosmic alternate worlds. The tightly focused group of paintings and works on paper included in Landscape with Meaning allow a profound understanding and recognition of the painterly skills at Moylan’s disposition.

Writing about an earlier show Barry Schwabsky commented; “Delicate and blunt, intricate and slapdash, serene and lurid commingle; painstaking ornamental elaboration turns into the impatient, sweeping gesture that would wipe the slate clean; abstract forms and spontaneous effects bump up against precisely rendered images, not without surprise but certainly without antagonism.”

Donna Moylan currently lives and works in Pasadena, CA and Brooklyn, NY. She lived for more than 20 years in Italy where she frequently exhibited. Since 1985 she has had 20 solo shows both in New York and abroad. Her work has appeared in such publications as The New Yorker, The New York Times, Art forum, Art in America, Art News and Tema Celeste. She is represented in collections including The Whitney, The New York Public Library and The Cleveland Center for the Arts among others.
