Axelle Fine Arts / Bertrand Delacroix Gallery present “BIG GUNS”, the first US solo exhibition of François Bard.

In a series of large-scale paintings, Bard presents compelling characters that are relatable, yet unknown. Without giving concrete details, Bard conveys the essence of who they are and an observer may feel they know much about them.

Applying a horizontal line across his works, Bard defines his subjects as being at the edge of their world, in a sense they are performing important work as guardians. Which world they guard is determined by their role, an adolescent, a gangster, or a dreamer; upon viewing these characters we sense their humanity. With Bard’s understanding of color and attention to texture, he is able to define these characters providing a deep insight of their importance and role. Though traditional perception of these roles may be contrary to what is represented, their identity overcomes traditional expectations.

Working across a variety of series: armory, dogs, dreamers, dog masters, speakers, and gangsters, these looming icons are ordinary people who watch and wait, between us and the unknowable limit. Whether a canine, torso, tree, or human, we observe the depth of Bard’s talent and execution in developing and presenting these characters to the world.

François Bard, born in 1959, attended Ecole Supérieure des Beaux- Arts of Paris and was selected to the Casa Velasquez 1988-1990. He was a professor of oil painting at the Ateliers Beaux-Arts in Paris for 10 years. Bard’s work has been featured in major international art fairs, including Art Miami, the London Art Fair, Art Hamptons, FORM London, Art London and Art Karsruhe Germany, and hangs in prestigious public and private collections around the world, including Ralph Lauren, Kit Kemp, Arkansas Arts Center – Museum of Art, and Jackye and Curtis Finch, Jr. Today, Bard spends his time between his Parisian studio and his home in Burgundy.
