Lozano’s Art

1. The Skeleton Kit: Lee owned a skeleton which she would occasionally
rearrange on the floor of her studio.

2. The Time Piece was shown to me in Lozano’s studio. I am not sure that she ever put it in a show, since she wasn’t given that opportunity much. Four finishing nails were put in the wall about two feet apart horizontally and three inches vertically. The top two and the bottom two were connected to each other by cotton strings that were strung tightly through a washer. The tension on the strings was enough to hold the washer where ever it is left. The washer could be moved right or left. (Future or Past). I have shown this piece in my one person show at Another Year in LA. It was a survey that had a large variety of work. Lozano’s work was mixed in and credited to her. Not for sale as I didn’t want to dilute the experience by explaining that it was remade from my memory of the work and not her actual construction. I just wanted it embedded and unexplained. The gallery owners became a little twitchy about this, thinking that it was in a sense deceiving. But it remains the way I am interested in showing these pieces.

3. Mortal remains. A combination piece by Lozano and me. There are two plastic boxes, one with Lozano’s nails and one with my calluses. Lozano’s part of the piece was a collection of her nails.

4. Dirty Laundry: a bed sheet that is stained by sexual activity.

5. I Ching Month: To live by the I Ching every day for thirty days.

6. Marijuana Month: To smoke weed every day for thirty days.

7. LSD Month: To take LSD every day for thirty days. (note: I believethat this may have been the piece that did Lee in. She was changed afterwards.

8. Grand Street Flyers: Lozano’s pile of announcements; ephemera from many important NYC shows at the Greene Gallery and others over years of shows were thrown out the window onto Grand street.

9. Beaming: Spending time projecting joyful thoughts to friends.

10. Tell the truth: When police are called for the action of the Grand Street Flyers she visits with them and shows them her stash. They confiscate it and then the last one out the door drops it back inside. Lee reports to me that they are a sharp bunch of guys and a lot more interesting than most artists to visit with.

11. Lozano’s booger collection kept in a plastic box. Lee had a fascination for revolting things. She once said to me with delight that she had just read about something that was worse than shit.
