This event has ended.

Saudi Arabian artist Jowhara AlSaud will be showing her development in this exhibition of her recent work. In using experimental photography as an artistic medium combined with a unique and traditional darkroom technique Jowhara Al Saud discovers intimate daily structures within the effects of visual communications caused by censorship in Saudi Arabia.

The artist makes drawings omitting skin, faces and detailed features which is then etched into the surface of an 8x10 or 4x5 inch negative, the same negative that was used to photograph what will become the background of the image. It is this vulnerability of the image under the lens of a camera and other manipulation processes involved, that Jowhara Al Saud wishes to highlight in her work. This approach creates a very subtle but poignant tension between the intimacy of the scenes, which are taken from familiar daily situations, and the anonymous and abstract effect after removing faces and features. Al Saud manages to create her own language within an already traditional and abused medium. Remarkable is the reflection of a reality of the world and the effort to create a new photographic language.
