Ortner's winning painting in ArtPrize 2009, Open Water 24 earned him a place in art world history as ArtPrize was and is the first competition where the winners are determined by polular vote. Over 300,000 individuals viewed and voted on the 1200 art works in the 2009 competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan placing Ornate's painting number one. After its debut at the Art Prize event, Open Water No. 24 was acquired by Richard and Elizabeth DeVos and loaned to the Grand Rapids Art Museum where it has been on exhibition for the past year. Ortner's Deep Water exhibition at Causey Contemporary will be the first opportunity for the public to view similar large scale paintings by Ortner since his win in the ArtPrize competition.
