Onishi Gallery presents “MR (Mixed Reality) Technology” exhibition in collaboration with CANON Inc. and Kyokuto Boeki Kaisha Ltd. (KBK) from Japan.

The MR Technology, developed by CANON Inc., is an imaging innovation that seamlessly integrates the real and the virtual worlds in real time. As the principle MR technology device, the video see-through head mounded display (HMD), which incorporates two compact built-in cameras, eliminates the parallax that would occur between the lines of sight of an observer and the camera for each eye. When wearing the HMD, computer–generated (CG) virtual objects appear to exist in real space, enabling the observer to easily grasp the scales of the virtual objects within real world surroundings.

The exhibition is comprised of four categories: Industry, Entertainment, Education and ART content.

Canon’s break-through technological innovation can be applied in the commercial setting—drastically reducing the cost and time normally required to build prototypes of items that would then be marketed to the public. By using MR Technology, manufactures would be able to simulate tests more efficiently than by producing unnecessary models, a process not only costly, but time-consuming. Similarly, Interior Design can also reap the benefits of using MR Technology- eliminating the steps and monetary expenses of selecting and trying out many pieces of furniture, and instead, use the technology to virtually design a space.

MR Technology has tremendous potential and capability in the entertainment, education, and art sectors. It can be used as a supplemental tool for learning and is capable of bringing two-dimensional artworks to the realm of three-dimensionality, inviting the viewer to experience the art on an entirely new level.

This exhibition showcases several 3D mixed reality experiences developed by the inventive minds at Canon. Each mixed reality experience is designed to challenge our previous conceptions of what 3D meant, and spark new ideas about what it can be with Canon’s ground-breaking technologies.
