Easy Street Gallery eagerly "Can I Live" by resident artist Hops. The inspiration for Can I Live stems from the true artist within that necessitates survival via self-expression. Easy Street Gallery owner Ian Kerr remarks, “Hops is a mad scientist, he comes up with an impossible idea and doesn’t stop until he has a fully-functional product.” Hops’ Can I Live will be on display from October 16 thru November 14, 2010. Opening reception at Easy Street (155 Grand Street) is free on Saturday, October 16, from 7p.m. to 10p.m.
With a devoted dedication to researching his ideas Hops has broken away from work of his past to produce brand new conceptual pieces for his solo exhibition at Easy Street, a feat most artists wouldn’t dare attempt. Hops views his show as an “opportunity to branch out and focus more on sculptural work, while still including traditional functional elements in each piece.”
One of the driving forces behind his madness is the desire to collaborate with others, introducing an additional and unique quality to his work. There will be several collaboration pieces including Banjo, Snic, Steve Bates and Toro, among others in his show incorporating a range of techniques including sand-blasted imagery, electroformed copper, colorful line work and, of course, his signature inline diffuser.
Hops originally hails from upstate New York, but has made his career as one of the innovators in glass pipes through his East-coast influence for more than ten years. In the early 2000’s he shared studio space in Burlington, VT, with talent the likes of Snic, Zach Puchowitz, Marcel Braun and Jason Lee, which expanded his skill-set and style immensely. Since 2007, Hops has resided and worked in Philadelphia. He continues to push his work to the limit and develop his vision beyond pure function.
