This event has ended.

Y Gallery and EVA NY present Day n Nite – neon works by Norma Markley. Curator Cecilia Jurado’s selection begins in the street-level shop, Eva NY, and continues below ground to the Y Gallery’s new cave-like Bowery space. Day n Nite is divided into two contrasting and polarized spaces, like yin and yang, heaven and hell. Ms. Markley’s neon lights up a nether world, conjuring unexpected images and associations from a pervasive, throwaway culture.

Who are the millions watching The Bachelor on a given night? One of them is Ms. Markley. She clips dialog from an episode, like, “Jillian must suffer more heartache when she’s told about Wes’s hidden secret,” for use as inspiration. She recycles snippets of diverse references as neon signage in a room installation. Ms. Markley’s bright, equivocal, oversized scripts nod to Roy Lichtenstein’s giant comics or John Wesley’s simplistic renderings and sinuous content.

Ms. Markley’s literary sources range from Charles Bukowski’s Purple as an Iris to Desperate Housewives.

Ms. Markley has exhibited widely—the Queens International 2006, Next Next Art at BAM, and Selections 30 at the Drawing Center. In June, Ms. Markley participated as Cecilia Jurardo’s choice in Young Curators, Young Ideas II at PPOW Gallery. Her work has been touring in Kuf-Mold to HAZ in Istanbul, Turkey, Belgium, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She was a recipient of a NYFA in Drawing (2003), and a Queens Council on The Arts Grant (2008). Ms. Markley lives in and works in New York.
