STEELLACE explores the roles and destinies of women in a changing society.
The artist asks the questions “Who is the woman of today? What is her role in society and what is demanded of her?” Hart’s women include a surreal bride dressed in steel with a beat-up silver teapot as her breast; a six-foot winged female dressed in flowing steel with a mantle of brass leaves exuding power; a mother with a young child, both holding a gun; and a steel magnolia with a female fetus on the back of her head and lush brass flowers for her legs. The contrasting mediums that Hart uses help to convey her message. Collaged layers of metal lace with antique costume jewelry, hand carved wood and smooth, porcelain-like skin combine with welded steel to create her modern woman.
The artist has also created small surreal paintings in fabricated metal frames similar to Russian iconic art. These paintings are realistic portrayals of female icons such as Eve and the Madonna with Child contained in jeweled brass and aluminum frames.
