Axelle Fine Arts / Bertrand Delacroix Gallery presents Brian Keith Stephens’ new paintings. Stephens has drawn from his classical painting background to create a highly personal works. His painting style is instinctive and immediate, very much about conveying the energy of a moment.
The seemingly innocent pastoral landscapes and animals of his rural Connecticut upbringing are translated into dynamic, mysterious images. Nostalgia and childhood memories inform the
simplicity of subject matter; however, the emotional and physical breadth of each piece is echoed in the layers upon layers of paint. The foreground and background of the paintings are fused together by passages of contrasting colors, with simple shapes stamped into the wet pigment. The resulting effect is of a dreamscape, a middle-space where every polychromatic inch of paint is equally important. The works are titled with prose that range from humorous to poetic, further revealing the artist’s vision.
Brian Stephens attended Western Connecticut State University, where he discovered his passion for art. He continued his education at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 1998. He then attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumier in Paris and recently received a Masters of Fine Art in Painting from the City College of New York.
