Suzuki's meticulously rendered large-scale drawings portray a sense of life, death, and melancholic beauty. Her work connects personal observations and references from widely varying disciplines into a synthetic view of knowledge evoking a fantastical, dreamlike vision. Her precise lines are imbued with a stylistic edge that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction.
Mariko Suzuki states: "I am always afraid of losing people or things I love. For me these drawings are more than a photographic representation or journal. They act as avatars, monuments, and symbols for personal eras in my life, (complete with people, place, smell, and feel) both negative and positive.
Each of my drawings reference compositional and stylistic elements from specific historical paintings in order to place my personal feelings into the broader stream of historical reference. Also, by working along with other artists, I hope to communicate the feeling of inspiration I have had with each of these works that have touched me deeply.
In my sculpture, I use the warmth and softness of felting in an attempt to dominate unsettling personal topics. I hope the familiarity and comfort associated with this medium can dispel the events and feelings I describe in these works.
