Kips Gallery presents “Light Encapsulated Space In-Between” by Jisoo Lee.

In her first Solo show in New York, Ms. Lee’s series of paintings will be on view at Kips Gallery in Chelsea, from May 6 through May 26, 2010.
Jisoo Lee’s monochrome paintings of light (and between light) slow down time; their saturated reds diffused into amorphous shapes stand apart from the razzle dazzle of much of today’s art world hyper activity. Ms Lee studied traditional Oriental painting in Seoul, utilizing “sumi” ink on hand-made “janggi” paper, before moving to New York in 2005 where she earned her second MFA from Pratt Institute, in 2007. Since arriving in New York, Ms Lee began her series of oil on canvas paintings that focus on the nuance of light. She does not paint directly from the light source, but rather she examines subtle shift in light over time, such as the burning of a candle flame, and from the compilation of memory she develops her work. The technique appears simple, but on close examination is richly varied in its range of effects, therefore the colors achieve a new luminosity.
