Blank Space Gallery presents The Space Between, a duel exhibition of paintings by Karen Schifano and Paige Williams. Both Schifano and Williams focus on transition, inviting the viewer to experience the tension within and between evocative moments.

Karen Schifano's Doors series are abstract paintings of doors and hallways; these portals and gateways look out onto the unknown. The thresholds of space reveal color and light, inviting mixed feelings of liberation, emptiness, and fear. They operate as metaphors for the transitional stages in life. The symbolic images are pared down to their essentials and carried out in a minimalist style. Schifano's work elicits tension between the metaphorical and the theoretical, opening the door to imaginative dreaming and reverie.

Paige Williams' paintings explore the physical and psychological disparities that exist in relationships, along with the joys and tensions that arise as a result of navigating these intervals. The works are about discovery, the struggle to relinquish control, and reveling in the absurd and unexpected. Simultaneously evoking and obscuring reality, the forms are extracted from representational images and focus on the existing duality. This range includes the contract of adult and child, practical and carefree, perfect and flawed, vulnerable and resilient, constant and irregular, confident and insecure, and shared and private. These works are the artist’s attempt to reveal the essence of human nature including varied degrees of elegance, awkwardness, clumsiness and grace.

This is Karen Schifano’s first exhibition with the gallery. She received a BA in art history from Swarthmore College, an MFA from Hunter College, and was a fellow at the MacDowell Colony and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.

This is Paige Williams’ first exhibition with the gallery. She received a BFA in Painting from Eastern Kentucky University, an MFA from University of Cincinnati, served as Chair of the MA in Art Education at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and is currently an Associate Professor of Painting at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
