This event has ended.

Reaves Gallery announces the opening of RAW. Raw is a live performance and installation that engages all five senses of the body in a critique of our ideas of fantasy, intimacy and sex. The performance invites audience members' participation and will be performed only once on opening night.

For this performance, Sinae Lee will take the stage with a partner and pass an egg yolk from mouth-to-mouth until the yolk breaks. Audience members, two at a time, are then invited to take the stage and in turn pass an egg yolk from mouth-to-mouth. As audience members become performers, they will engage all of their senses - smell, touch, taste, hearing, and sight - while interpreting and reinterpreting the simple act of passing the egg yolk. The performance will be documented with video, which will become part of a later installation.

RAW is an adaptation of an earlier video performance, Vitellus (2009), and the second in a series of Lee's live performances that consider the relationship between food and sex. Earlier this year, Nyotaimori, performed at the RedLine Residency in Denver, Colorado, involved men eating sushi off naked women lying on a dinner table while the audience watched.

In past years, Lee's work has become increasingly concerned with questions of the ownership of one's body, and how people - and particularly, women - are presented, packaged, marketed, and commoditized. Drawing on true stories involving prostitution, sex trafficking, mail order brides, and internet dating, Lee has created abstract performances that challenge and engage.

Sinae Lee holds a B.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art and a M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2007, Lee received a Fulbright Fellowship to research prostitution and human trafficking in the Netherlands. Lee's work has been exhibited widely, both domestically and abroad, including at Delaware Center of Contemporary Art; Arti-et-Amicitiae, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; La Mer Gallery, Seoul, Korea; Arario Gallery, New York; Ceres Gallery, New York; and the Docklands, Ireland, where she was part of a group exhibition in the Video Apartment that included Marina Abramovic, Paul McCarthy, Regina Jose Galindo, and many more artists. This is her first solo exhibition in New York.
