This event has ended.

Well-known art critic, novelist, and painter John Berger once said, “The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe.” However, what happens when people see something unknown to them through their preconceived notions in this world? They would probably be either terrified or threatened having no reference to define what they see.

The works of Sung Soo Kim in this exhibition include eight sculptures that ask a fundamental question and challenge the viewer with respect to what “seeing” really means. These unknown, oddly shaped, never-before-seen creations with mostly primary colors put the viewer in a position that forces him or her exert some effort in order to physically see the works of art. They are placed on pedestals or shelves to slightly challenge the perspective. The viewer needs to engage in a little bit of effort – to tiptoe, or to climb up a ladder, or a few steps – in order to get a glimpse of what is displayed in the gallery. Once the viewer finally encounters them, these works provide him or her with an uncomfortable position. In addition to the fact that Kim’s works are installed in demanding ways, each abstract object in itself also seems peculiar. These biomorphic shapes with bizarre arrangements of machine parts, little light bulbs and switches irregularly attached to them, give no clue to understanding them. Here again, the viewer will have no privilege in getting to know them.
