This event has ended.

PaulaBarr chelsea will present Travel in Abstract Lands, a group show featuring the work of five artists: James Jahrsdoerfer, DeShawn Lamar Duma, John Nyberg, Darryl Starr and Dennis Wood. The artists will be present at the opening on Thursday, June 24, from 6 to 8pm.

Travel in Abstract Lands takes us on an eerie journey. We go from the soul-searching surrealistic world of a painter to the abstract world of another one inspired by the burden of existence, then from imaginative and colorful works pushing our abstract vision to the intriguing pieces of an innovative mixed-media sculptor, and finally to photographs shedding a different light on food. With Travel in Abstract Lands, PaulaBarr chelsea offers a enchanting opportunity to take a trip outside the real world.

James Jahrsdoerfer was born and lives in the New York metropolitan area. He started drawing and painting at a young age. He attended Villanova University studying to be a doctor and changed to direction to painting. He got his art education at a local college and the school of hard knocks. Most art studies have taken place painting outdoors and in the studio. He works as much as possible from real life. Constantly exploring, always looking, forever dreaming, he stylistically drifts between realism, surrealism, impressionism and expressionism, mixing and matching depending on the piece, the day or mood. One thing always remains constant: his attempt to find the soul of the subject.

DeShawn Lamar Duma holds a BFA from Indiana University and is currently completing a MFA at Pratt Institute. His work has been shown in numerous galleries, most recently during a solo show at the Aeon Logic Gallery in Brooklyn, as well as in group shows at The Art of Fashion, and Urban Canvas in New York. DeShawn likes the effect produced by the blurring of a color or line from feverish brushwork, yet he often desires a more instinctual primordial mark, one that results from plunging a sharp object into the surface of the work and forcefully dragging it. The burden of existence is what inspires him to produce art; scraping and scarring the work provides both formal structure and content.

John Nyberg was born in 1942. He studied painting and drawing with Eve Thorpe as his mentor, and received his BFA and MFA from Utah State University at Logan, Utah in visual art. Additional training was taken at the San Francisco Art Academy and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. At present, he is exploring and trying to push abstract vision using new paint technology with mixed-media with collaged acrylic paint peels. The latest works use wonderful color and are innovative and imaginative. Shows include the BGH Gallery located in the prestigious Bergamot Station Art Complex in Santa Monica, California, and the Winchester Center Gallery in Las Vegas, Nevada. His work was selected to be part of a group show at Viridian Artists Inc., in New York City. The juror for the show was Anne Lampe, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He was a winner in the Clark County, Nevada Van-go project. In 2002 he was awarded an International Artist Award by the IAOCA in Kyoto, Japan, and was awarded best of show at the "Spring Art Salon and Competition" in Mesquite, Nevada. Nyberg was one of the first area artists to work with mixed-media assemblages, photo copy art, and mail art. His work has been exhibited in many competitions in several states and countries, and has won several awards. The work is in numerous private and public collections worldwide.

Darryl Starr was raised in Richmond, Virginia. He is a mixed-media sculptor and three-dimensional design innovator with over 15 years of fine arts teaching experience in various disciplines. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Education, a Master of Fine Arts, Sculpture, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture. His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and features in the permanent collections of Anderson Gallery, Virginia Commonwealth University, First & Merchants National Bank, Richmond, Ms. Tamaisa Phillips, New York, Dr. and Mrs. Louis Solomonsky, Richmond, Dr. John Sundirt, Key West, and Michael Phillips, Grand Rapids.

Dennis Wood is Canadian born and bred. He lives in Toronto. His education includes a degree in fine art as well as a degree in food and nutrition. As a young boy, many hours were spent staring at and playing with food. As an adult, he still spends time staring at, rearranging and enhancing food, but now for the camera. For over 25 years, he has been a professional Food Stylist, setting the stage for print, television and movie productions. Of all the products he has worked with, it was gelatin that immediately stirred his imagination. It is translucent, malleable and has an ability to hold light. He is capturing the surrealistic quality of this unique medium through limited edition, non-manipulated digital prints. Dennis trusts that the public's imagination will be further awakened, as his was so long ago.
