This event has ended.

In each painting, Jean Daniel Bouvard strives to create equilibrium and a sense of harmony to portray a mood or atmosphere. Often compared to Edward Hopper, his paintings are quite, simple scenes that strongly rely on composition. In most of his work the ocean is present. If it is not in the background of the painting, he is able to capture the atmosphere of the seaside so well that one can detect its presence close by. Bouvard works in both gouache and oil paints. His colors are muted but complex; he readily employs under painting and short impressionistic strokes with many variations of tones.

Bouvard was born in Saint-Etienne France in 1957 where he stayed until 1976 when he moved to Paris to pursue architectural studies. His training is evident in his work; his lines are clean and simple and he has a strong mastery of perspective. His first solo exhibition was in 1988 at Galerie Philippe Frégnac in Paris. Since then, he has participated in several group shows and hosted numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. He was awarded the Prix du Portrait from the Paul-Louis Weller Institut de France in 1991 and in 1995 he received the Prix Gabriel Oliver from the Foundation Prince Pierre de Monaco.
