This event has ended.

Aerial photos of the New Jersey shore are paired with photograms of bottles that suggest plants and marine organisms. A set of 10 photograms shows a nest in which the usual organic materials are replaced by bits of plastic. Images of leaves from Costa Rica are composed from detritus from the beach. A wall construction depicts grassy fields laid over the plan of a village, but the grass is painted on clear plastic bottles and boxes.
Over the last 100 years, plastic detritus has accumulated around the world at a frightening speed. It is ubiquitous, but seems invisible. Vast quantities have collected in the oceans, forming enormous gyres, with one in the Pacific reported to be twice the size of Texas. While the trash may break down into ever-tinier fragments, most of it will never disappear. Spreading like a virus, the specks of plastic called nurdles are now part of every life form on earth, including man. It is the spectre of this final relationship that drives Ms. Hockaday’s artwork.
