This event has ended.

The first exhibition in 2011 at NY Coo Gallery will be “The Sixth HAFH Exhibition: Emaki for Tomorrow.” This is a 27-artist group exhibition by the Tama Art University New York Club, including works by residents of New York and Japan.

The first Home Away from Home exhibition was in 2003. The series is so named by the New York residents of the Tama Art University alumni group to reflect the dual nature of their artistic heritage as Japanese artists now living/working in NYC.

The subtitle for this exhibition, "Emaki for Tomorrow," is the theme proposed by the honorary chairman of the Tama Art University New York Club, Hitoshi Nakazato, shortly before his sudden death in July 2010. This distinguished painter and printmaker, a former professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s graduate art school, was one of the founders and guiding forces of the Tama Art University New York Club, and its first president.

The concept that this exhibition is built around is emaki, short for emakimono, literally “picture scroll,” a traditional Japanese art format that’s hundreds of years old. It was often used to tell a story; it is, in a way, the forerunner of manga. But the exhibit title also includes “tomorrow” – taking emaki into the future, positioning the format in the modern world. To do that, the restrictions of the form are loosened: only the oblong shape and flat structure are obligatory for the new works created for this exhibit. The scrolling aspect of the format is optional for participating artists, and any material and size are permitted.

Additionally, during this exhibition, there will be a section of the gallery dedicated to smaller art works that will be priced at $100 apiece.

Please come and enjoy viewing our artists’ varied interpretations of the idea of emaki in their original art works.
