This event has ended.

A retrospective of artist David X. Young: founder of the legendary Jazz Loft, Fulbright Scholar to Haiti, and prolific visual artist.

For the first time, a collection of works by David X Young, who was always ahead of his time yet on the fringe of success, will be presented for public view at the East Village non-profit gallery, La MaMa Galleria. The exhibition will include pieces from his most notable Jazz Loft period, as well as a range of works and artifacts demonstrating his diversity as an artist. The largest portion of the exhibition however, will focus on some of David's most passionate material, his work inspired by Haiti.

In many ways, David X Young was more of a Renaissance artist than a modern one. He could draw like DaVinci or cartoon like Carl Barks, play with color like Cezanne or emulate the raw compositions of DeKooning. In addition to being a painter, he was an adept photographer, filmmaker, editor and writer. Although David experimented with different styles, media, and themes, his love for Haiti, it's people and it's rich musical culture was a constant force that kept him returning to it's shores for artistic inspiration throughout his lifetime.

This exhibition, while attempting to encompass a multitude of David's talents, focuses on a series of watercolor paintings called The Haitian Energy Field. David's use of bold colors, objects in nature and religious symbol make these geometric abstractions transform into intricate collages or scrapbooks of his many expeditions to Haiti in hopes of capturing the essence of Haitian vodun music and culture.

All of these works will be available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds will go to the the relief effort under way in Haiti.
