"All That Glitters” Exhibition

Nancy Hoffman Gallery

poster for "All That Glitters” Exhibition

This event has ended.

A group show of gallery artists focusing on the oft’ quoted line.  Artists were free to interpret the concept as they chose: some using glitter itself, others painting or sculpting beads or pearls or other reflective surfaces.  The exhibition opens on December 9th, and continues through January 15th, a perfect holiday motif.

Timothy Cummings’ painting, “Dusk Diamond Kite Parade” of a young boy in a harlequin costume and his dog in a polka dot dress, both holding kites garnished with glitter, is as glittery as the paintings get.  A pensive gaze on the young boy’s face seems to project wonder at the world around him. Jesse Small’s “J.D.Z” series of talk bubbles, ghosts and globes of ceramic are bedecked in his version of glitter, rhinestones in green, blue and red surround the artist’s signature shapes, some combined with imagery of trucks he saw while living in China. Tactile and sparkling, these objects were created before the artist knew of the theme for the December show, inspired by the visuals in China.  Both Colette Calascione and Nicolas Africano use beads in their “Glitter” pieces; Calascione in her painting of a nymph who sports earrings of fresh flowers, an arm bracelet of a coiling snake, and pearls around her neck that shine and glimmer and reflect the light of the enchantress pictured.  Africano in his amber glass bust places beads on the neck of his muse; a contemporary and classic pose, the bust is life size, glowing as light passes through it.  Asya Reznikov’s new video “Heirloom” is a continuously self-packing Russian lacquer jewelry box.  The video is projected into the jewelry box; the artist’s hands stuff heirlooms and jewelry into the small box till it overflows.  Rather than her signature suitcase, the lacquer box references her Russian heritage and addresses the meaning of personal and cultural heirlooms.  Liséa Lyons’ photographs are glitter-filled.  Her daughter, her model, wears sparkling silver glitter on her eyes, golden jewelry around her neck, and to top it off, her hands flutter through the air stretching her necklace for all to view with glitter nail polish.
