This event has ended.

Jim Napierala's new paintings expound upon his previous work. By layering flashe, aluminum leaf, and acrylic on wood panel, he creates paintings which resonate with an optical and emotive beauty. In a departure from prior work shown at Allen, the artist employs larger blocks of color, delineating those forms with precise black outlines, as well as leaving larger areas of the wood ground exposed. The high-keyed blocks of color and undulating black outlines carry the eye up, around, and into the painting, creating a tension between color and line. The warmth of the wood surface, and the cool of the aluminum leaf act as neutral spaces interacting with and complimenting the intense color.

The language of intuition and the mechanics of logic are distilled into paintings which evoke a meditative state amidst a vibrant visual flux. Surfaces that shimmer and undulate, a sophisticated use of color, and a new emphasis on line result in an elegant and compelling body of work.

"Exposed" is Napierala's third solo exhibition at Allen Projects. He has exhibited extensively in New York and throughout the country, and is represented in numerous public and private collections.
