"Behind the Green Door" Exhibition
Harris Lieberman
This event has ended.
Harris Lieberman presents Behind the Green Door, a group exhibition that examines the way artists relate to an element of contemporary culture specifically sex and fetish. The show borrows its title from the iconic adult film from 1970s, and will explore how artists play (inside and outside the studio) using material and content to focus on ideas of perversion, taboo, entertainment and excitement in their work.
The 1972 release of Behind the Green Door was a catalyst in bringing the exploration of sex and fetish into the cultural mainstream and was indicative of broader movements of personal liberation in the 1970s. The film title itself was a reference to several short stories from the first half of the 20th century as well as a 1950s pop song, in which the “green door” became a metaphor for a place to seek out adventure that had been previously off-limits.
As an extension of the exhibition, the rear gallery will be transformed into a video library where selection of mainstream movies selected by participating artists will be screened for the duration of the show, highlighting popular culture’s influence on contemporary art today.
