"Drawing on Paper" showcases M55 artists' recent drawings on paper, all carefully executed and highly finished. In technique, medium, size, scale and imagery, the drawings are broadly diverse, yet share the same desire of exploring the realms of aesthetics and theory with the languages of the life around us, communicating information, telling stories, creating scenarios, and conjuring newly imagine worlds. In today's world, contemporary artists consider drawling less a process than an autonomous, finished product. Yet if not itself a process, "Drawing on Paper" demonstrates and displays the immense rewards of treating drawing as a medium that needs to be tested and retested- continually "proposed". Neither declaring the medium's essence nor denying its exigencies (as in postmodernist eclecticism) the exhibition maintains a tension between the fixity and fluidity of the art of drawing.
