"Things Just Aren’t The Way They Used To Be" Exhibition
Kate Werble Gallery
This event has ended.
Works for Things Just Aren’t The Way They Used To Be were chosen for their inextricable interest and observation of the material world through the vernacular of the everyday and it’s objects. Even as we are increasingly immersed in the virtual realm, the everyday world equally confounds reality with its unprecedented saturation of material things. The works in this show enforce the substance of reality through the physical and the assumed understanding of the idea of the object.
The objects represented are not only recognizable and of the quotidian world but through physical and material manipulation they tease out new meanings. There is a light gesture and a personable resonance in the focus of the works creating an opening in the veil of the mundane. Not relying on poetics or mysticism, the works speak to the nature of perception and the object and in challenging expectations develop alternative narratives with humor, intellect and sincerity. Although in some the evidence of the hand has retreated, there is a quiet embrace of making and a conversation with each individual’s relationship to craft. In many cases these artists seem to imbue these objects with a life of their own.
