An installation by Cheryl Parry, drawings by Clarity Haynes, and sculpture by Jeannine Bardo offer an alternative to the idealized, hyper-glamorous, and superficial portrayals of women prevalent in current popular culture. Their personal, dream-like work explores conceptual and visceral images of women who are all too often ‘not seen’ in our society. Cheryl Parry explores her personal history having studied art at the same time that she worked as a maid. The thread that ran through both endeavors was the sanctuary of daydream. Maid with Wallpaper Wings is an installation of paintings, text, sound, and “shadow boxes” linking her private experience to the lesser-known history of maids. Those who “wash and mend and daydream the world” are still invisible just as Cinderella remains the symbol of the servant with the rich imagination. Clarity Haynes works with soft drawing media on paper to create large-scale, archetypal portraits of women. She is concerned with psychological and emotional states and the tensions within them: rage and tenderness, confrontation and concealment, empathy and autonomy. She is inspired by the history of portraiture in painting and by the ways in which changing conventions reflect ideas about gender. Her portraits playfully refer to the past while exploring contemporary reality. Jeannine Bardo’s fascination with the human body informs her aesthetic. She finds the sculpting process to be a constant dialogue: an experience with intuition, what cannot be seen, only felt and the physical. Her work stems from how she finds connections with herself, the human race, and the world around her. Each work is not only a study of form, but a spiritual and emotional study as well. Her use of non-traditional materials to create traditional forms leads the viewer to question the underlying meaning and hopefully reconsider and appreciate the hand of the artist.
