Voyeurism. Sexuality. Solitude. Christopher James Wilson’s first solo show, In Your Face, exemplifies expressionism through large-scale oil figure paintings. Launching at New Century Artists Gallery, In Your Face will incorporate social media through Twitter to create interactivity with its audience. Gallery attendees and online Twitter viewers will be able to share their feelings on each painting’s Twitter
profile by tweeting real-time during the opening reception.

Christopher James Wilson’s figure paintings reflect the skill of photorealism greats from the 70’s such as Chuck Close, with a more painterly style. Through his technical ability, combined with his acute sense of aesthetic detail, Wilson developed a system to connect various-sized canvasses together to create larger than life paintings comprised of anywhere from three to more than a dozen canvasses. He has gone beyond traditional 2-dimensional figure paintings, producing multidimensional artwork that jumps out at the viewer.

In Up Close (64 inches x 64 inches), Christopher James Wilson plays with negative space by surrounding the centerpiece with smaller floating canvasses, creating an expanding image while maintaining the intensity of the beautiful woman’s gaze.

Inspiration for the In Your Face series was drawn from Christopher James Wilson’s commissions over the years and previous series, Global Citizen Project, which have led to his focusing on capturing the essence of human emotion. In doing so, Wilson combines painting techniques from the old masters with contemporary compositions.

Christopher James Wilson’s instructional artistic tree can be traced back to Jacques Louis David, through his instructor Marvin Mattelson. Wilson’s training was based on methods developed and passed down from the old masters at École des Beaux-Arts in France. Sharing in this artistic lineage are Paul Delarouche, Jean-Léon Gérôme, George Bridgeman, Frank J. Reilly, and John Frederick Murray.
