This event has ended.

Living Pavilion is the culmination of the first annual international design/build competition co-hosted by the participatory arts program FIGMENT, the AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA), and the Structural Engineering Association of New York (SEAoNY). The competition asked entrants to design an architectural pavilion for the 2010 summer season on governor's Island that would serve as a temporary gathering place for people to enjoy a planned or impromptu performance or lecture. Entrants were also asked to consider the most efficient and sustainable design possible with a goal to make a net zero impact that could become a prototype for a new, truly sustainable way of thinking about design and construction.

The winning entry by Ann Ha, Assoc. AIA and Behrang Behin, Assoc. AIA is a low-tech, low-impact installation that employs milk crates as the framework for growing a planted surface. Living Pavilion aspires to synthesize form, structure, light, and life. The pavilion's surface is planted with hanging shade-tolerant liriope plants that provide a cool environment due to evapotranspiration. At the end of the season, the modular design will allow for easy disassembly and distribution of the planted milk crates to the New York are for use in homes, public places, and community gardens. Any crates that are not redistributed will be recycled by a local milk crate manufacturer for future use.

The exhibition showcases the process behind the Living Pavilion from jury day through construction and celebrates the numerous volunteers who helped put this project together.
