"This series of sculptures, entitled I am here, is based on a poem of the same name by Japanese poet Michio Mado, which speaks of the concept that being is meaning. There is truth in any moment, however ordinary. I started this project by taking photos of an ordinary spot, day after day, at the exact same time, from the same vantage point. Despite the constants of time and place, no two photos were ever the same. An endless parade of humans, cars, and even birds, guaranteed that every moment captured was different.
These photos formed the basis for I am here. I chose to work with plastic mesh, a material used to create temporary fencing in urban construction sites. Plastic mesh seemed a good medium for reconstructing the impermanent moments recorded with my digital camera--it recalls the nature of construction sites, temporary, and it creates a pixel-like visual effect. I have produced these series of work to be site-specific where they have been displayed. For this show, I have created a few new pieces that reference streetscapes within a few blocks of the Ise gallery. I am captivated by ever-shifting time and space. Through the process of constructing such ephemeral moments, I find beauty and am awed by our being." - Harumi Ori
