Joanna Mulder "I FEEL YUCKY, The Candy Colored Nightmare"
Gitana Rosa Gallery
This event has ended.
The body of work entitled "I FEEL YUCKY, The Candy-Colored Nightmare” is the beginning of a larger series that explores not only the juxtposition of bright, cartoonish imagery with themes of depravity and putrification, but also joyously celebrates the mindbending genre of psychedelic art. The series was conceived as a basic study of hedonistic
creation, ignoring all but one pre-set parameter, a focus on concepts that thrilled me and only me.
As a professional illustrator/graphic designer, the majority of my artistic endeavors are generated purely from the direction of others, attempting to capture THEIR vision, according to THEIR specific tastes, with little to no personal fingerprint. This project equally embodies the opposite of this, allowing me to bring to life all of the things that live inside of me, with the carefree attitude similar to that of a child inventing their own imaginary friend. There are no boundaries here.
This project is also an act of bloodletting, allowing the content to pour out and relieve the constantly building pressure of the beehive buzzing inside my skull. I am an advocate of being completely immersed and moreover hoplessly lost within one’s own imagination, and for me, it is my only defense mechanism against the constant daily demands and horrors of “reality”. As I shut down, zone out, drift off, float away, these are the places I go.
I really like it there. And when I am forced to come back from the other side,....I FEEL YUCKY.
