This event has ended.

La MaMa Galleria and ArtAsiaNYC presents the largest exhibition of contemporary Burmese art ever shown in the United States or Europe. The work of 15 leading artists from Myanmar will be on display.

Capturing traditional culture on canvas has long been a constant among Myanmar’s contemporary artists. At the same time, it is important to bear in mind that the country has been isolated from most of the world for the past five decades. It is only in recent years that the nation has started to open up to tourism and foreign business which has helped to nurture an environment more conducive to artistic expression. In critiquing a previous ArtAsiaNYC exhibition, Asian Art News had this to say:

“There is an unadulterated beauty and charm rarely seen in
contemporary art that can melt even the most hard-nosed
cynics views and lure them into taking pleasure in the serene
splendor of the paintings.”

An article in Newsweek had the following headline: “Asia’s Next Art Boom: Savvy collectors are heading to Burma.”

Richard Streiter, founder of ArtAsiaNYC served as a Dean and Vice President for 28 years at Pratt
Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. Subsequent to retiring from FIT,
Mr. Streiter, while touring SE Asia in 2001, discovered and became committed to promoting contemporary Burmese art and providing scholarship and material support to the Yangon State School of Fine Art. He has also made substantial contributions to orphanages and other worthy charitable organizations in Myanmar over the past several years.
