This event has ended.

An exhibition of new paintings by Sarah Plimpton – in which notions of stability, symmetry and spatial boundaries are challenged by colorful abstract shapes that float and randomly connect in space - opens at June Kelly Gallery.Plimpton, an accomplished poet, will also show a handmade book that she created with one of her poems and her illustrations.

Plimpton’s paintings suggest deep solitude as she aligns simple forms and bolder, more assertive colors, moving away in these new paintings from her traditionally restrained palette. She offers contradictions -- a vision of vastness and sense of seclusion. One critic wrote that Plimpton creates silence waiting to be disturbed, a strangely seductive calmness that nonetheless is provocative.

Plimpton’s new work continues to distance itself from its earlier vocabulary that began with subtle, more somber tones and elemental forms. She introduces brighter, more natural colors that can be found in flowers, birds and butterflies -- the many colors of life in a nuanced dialogue with sometimes natural shapes and masses but often more geometric angles, lines and dots.

Plimpton is a native of New York City. She received her bachelor’s degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard Medical School before moving to Paris, where she lived for 19 years. She also studied at Pratt Institute in Manhattan.
