Media: Drawing, Other
Working with collaged materials from a variety of print media, Gil's abstract landscapes are documents of appropriation, re-contextualized through the filter of her intuitive practice. Drawn to archetypes and patterns, her work references the universe and instances of genesis. On top of her collaged surface, Gil paints out large areas, in effect editing with black or white. Taking cues from the remaining fragments she draws repetitious details with ink and brush, into patterns of her own devising. Here the mass-produced stands in for that which was traditionally considered women's work: paper doilies and images of flowers reference handiwork and gardening. She works to deconstruct these elements thereby creating "a sort of logical truth", the foundation for entirely new narratives.
