Clic Gallery presents the US debut of “Three Boys From Pasadena: A Tribute to Helmut Newton” featuring the photographs of Mark Arbeit, Just Loomis, and George Holz. The accompanying book, published by Factory/LeJoker, will be available for sale as well.

Photographers Mark Arbeit, George Holz and Just Loomis first met Helmut Newton in 1979 while students at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Eventually all three became Helmut’s assistants during one of the most exciting and prolific times in Helmut’s photography. For almost thirty years, they kept in touch and shared their personal work with both Helmut and his wife June. In June 2010, “Three Boys from Pasadena”, curated by June Newton, premiered at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. The exhibit consists of each photographer’s individual work, as well as several memorabilia panels, consisting of never-before-seen snapshots, handwritten notes, journal pages, contact sheets, and other souvenirs of their time with Helmut. “Three Boys from Pasadena: A Tribute to Helmut Newton” is an exceptional memorial to one of the 20th century’s most iconic photographers, and an unusually revealing look at personal and professional relationships among artists and protégés.

Helmut Newton (1920-2004), a native of Berlin, was known for his provocative and erotically charged black-and-white photography, especially of female nudes. His shocking and later much-imitated style was a constant in the pages of US Vogue and Vogue Paris.

Mark Arbeit trained under Newton and Irving Penn and has shot for InStyle, Marie Claire, Vogue Paris, People, Forbes, and many other publications. He is the author of “Mark Arbeit Work” (2009), featuring an introduction by June Newton.

Just Loomis worked as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar and The New York Times Magazine before turning to portrait and documentary work. His collection of documentary Americana “As We Are,” edited by June Newton, was recently published by Hatje Catz.

George Holz’ images have been published in Vanity Fair, Vogue Italia, Madame Figaro, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, and the New York Times Magazine, and he shot several iconic album covers and film posters, including Madonna’s “Borderline.” His work is in permanent collections at the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, and Centro Cultural/Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City.
