Roger White Exhibition
Rachel Uffner Gallery
This event has ended.
Rachel Uffner Gallery is pleased to present a show of new work by Roger White. For his second solo outing at the gallery, White will exhibit large-scale oil paintings as well as smaller works on paper, in which he continues his examination of the interstices between representation, abstraction and the tactile sphere of everyday life. While in the past, each of White’s abstractions referred to a single patterned object (a quilt, a shirt, and so on), his new paintings suggest groupings of things in their relationships to each other, within the spaces they occupy.
The non-repeating patterns inhabiting White’s paintings and their corresponding watercolor studies are derived from fragments of observational drawings. In his work, White seeks to retain a type of pre-representational space, where disparate elements form the rudimentary organization of a picture.
These themes of pattern, observation, and abstraction are also pursued in a series of airbrushed acrylic drawings on paper. Using sets of stencils as matrices to depict stylized suns or shadows, the works form a meditation on the role of variability within artistic process.
