Selections from 1976-2009 begins with the Personal Iconography developed
by Joyce Harris Mayer in the 1970s, along with her investigations of the myth of the
Great Mother and the Paleolithic constructs connected with this myth. The exhibition
ends with “Winds of My Mind,” an archival pigment print that is a “self-portrait,”
depicting the artist with the world entering her soul and central nervous system. The
chaotic material from our culture passes through a whirlwind in her brain and
emerges as her art. The artist is her art. Her art therefore, not herself, is the point of the exhibition. The images are a dialog with the past and present to be left for future generations just as past generations of artists left their dialog for us.
