Westbeth Gallery presents CHRIS TWO M EY & Core Constellation, a mid career survey of Chris Twomey’s multifaceted artwork and a group exhibition by members of the Core Group, including Barbara Ellmann , M ariah Fee , Jayne Holsinger , Sara Klar , Bonnie Steinsnyder, Anita Thacher, Judith Uehling, and Elenore Weber. The show is curated by Jayne Holsinge. A catalogue of the exhibition, which includes an essay by Eleanor Heartney, will accompany the exhibit.

The “Core Group” is a consortium of artists who have collaborated on various projects over the past 15 years. In this collaborative effort, Twomey is the first artist in the group to be featured in a constellation of group shows, each time “starring” a different member.

Chris Twomey’s formidable body of work, inspired by themes of origins and identity, includes paintings, drawings, films, photographs, installations, musical compositions and text. These works are organized in series, each series becoming its own conceptual riff on a theme. Twomey’s bold and restless imagination takes the viewer from the beginnings of life, with huge digitized baby forms, to far into the future, where beast and human merge, commenting on the intersection of science with revelations about human nature. Throughout Twomey’s career, this search for identity, within the flux of time, context and environment, has been consistent.

Twomey’s most recent solo exhibition, “ASTRAL FLUFF: Carnal Bodies in Celestial Orbit” showed at CREON Gallery this spring, Twomey’s other solo exhibitions; M adonna Series 2006, and Omni Series 2004, have been reviewed in Art in America, M-The New York Art world, The Scientist, ASCI online, Resolve 40 online. CNN also produced a Jeanne M oos news segment about Omni Series on Anderson Cooper 360.

Graduating from Pratt Institute with a M aster’s Degree in Fine Arts, (New Forms) Twomey received a CAPS grant, Ford Grant, and Experimental TV award. 10 years working in film, winning industry awards and an American Film Institute Directing Internship, gave Twomey extensive experience in documentary and feature film making, as well as immersion in the art films of M aya Deren, Stan Brakhage, and Jonas M ekas. This background is reflected in Twomey’s sensibility as an artist, where subject matter, sound, time-based media and montage-like visuals are consistently utilized.
