This event has ended.

Skarstedt Gallery announces two new exhibitions: George Condo, New Paintings in Gallery One and Rosemarie Trockel, Selected Works in Gallery Two.

This will be the first exhibition of new paintings by George Condo at Skarstedt Gallery. On view will be three “Drawing Paintings” which are an amalgamation of acrylic, charcoal and oil pastels layered on linen to create original and vast figurative compositions. In this series, Condo hybridizes his masterful drafting and painting skills with his cartoon figures to create colorful and sometimes monochromatic montages where art history and imagination merge onto the canvases. In Spatial Figures (2010), Condo places a perfectly proportioned female form on the right side, grasping a Jean Louis figure, a recurring character found throughout his work, while other cartoons and nudes are woven with highlights of vibrant colors in and out of the white background.

In Gallery Two are works by Rosemarie Trockel that span her oeuvre and are comprised of works on paper, knitted works and sculptures. This selection exemplifies many of the concurrent themes found throughout her work such as: the female role in society; trademarks and symbols as social signifiers and decorations; and finally, her fascination with ethnographic and scientific studies often expressed through her sculptures. In Untitled (Woolmark/Playboy Bunny) (1985), Trockel merges two machine knitted sheets of fabric mounted on panels, one flanked with iconic Woolmark symbols and the other with Playboy Bunny emblems. This diptych touches on the many social implications of woman’s role in society both as a homemaker and sex object, but also repeats the two symbols enough that they are reduced to mere decorative objects.

George Condo was born in New Hampshire in 1957 and currently works and resides in New York City. Condo was awarded the Francis J. Greenberger Award in 2005 and was also the recipient of the annual artist’s award from ArtsConnection New York and the Anderson Ranch National Artist Award, both in 2008. Condo is also included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial and will be honored with a mid-career retrospective at the New Museum in New York in 2011.

Rosemarie Trockel was born in Schwerte, German in 1952 and currently lives and works in Cologne. She has been the subject of numerous Museum exhibitions including, the Dia Foundation for the Arts New York (2002), The Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt, Germany (2004) and more recently she was honored with a complete mid-career retrospective at MAXXI – Museo Nazionale Delle Arti Del XXI Secolo, Roma, Italia (2006). This coming May 2010, the Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland will be exhibiting a survey of her drawings, while the Kunstalle Zurich, Switzerland will exhibit her sculptures and objects.
