This event has ended.

Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation Gallery opens an exhibition of photography by Julie Fogarty in the newly constructed window gallery. Themes of gender, sexuality and identity take place in this exibition of portraiture.

Straddling the intimacy of post coital vulnerability, Julie Fogarty does not introduce the other to an objectifying onlooker but rather aspects of her own field of vision to her own community. What we see when looking at her photographs is an extension of herself, her own world and the absence of performance, if only for a moment. Publicly, her subjects blatantly perform their gender, sexuality or socio-economic position. Through an extensive editing process and slow, thoughtful production, Fogarty enters this moment where these roles take a back seat, revealing a sometimes elegant and proud, sometimes exhausted and exposed reality. Whether it is a member of her family in the series "What’s Wrong with Ma?," or her community in "Portraits in a Queer Time and Place" (selection exhibited here), we engage with the subjects, allowing ourselves to be seen by them as they look directly into our eyes. We are forced into the position which Fogarty herself takes as the photographer – we see the subject as she does, exposing not their or our own intimacy but her own.
