BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn opens 2011 with Neo-nomads: What travels with you?, a group exhibition that poses a question addressing the transient nature of contemporary life in the 21st century: What does one take and carry as a Neo-nomad? Organized by a curatorial team of artists and academics—Anne-Laure Fayard, Assistant Professor of Management at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU; Baseera Fox Khan, an artist pursuing her MFA at Cornell University; and Aileen Wilson, Associate Professor of Art and Design Education at Pratt Institute—Neo-nomads features the work of seven contemporary artists who examine their relationships to mobility, evocative objects, and a sense of home as they utilize physical, emotional, and personal histories related to packing, leaving, and moving. Neo-nomads opens Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at BRIC Rotunda Gallery and will be on view through February 26, 2011.

Exile—voluntary or forced, nomadism, packing, leaving, and moving are not new notions; yet technology and increased mobility have dramatically changed our sense of space and our perception of home. Neo-nomads, contemporary nomads sometimes referred to as “global souls,” are constantly on the move and changing geographies. Journeying through urban life, Neo-nomads challenge the idea of home as well-defined, physical space. The works in Neo-nomads posit home as a sense of space, a collage of all previously experienced homes combined with memories of objects, moments, and people, in much the same way that our perceptions in general are always imbued with our memories. Working with a variety of media (photography, sculpture, video, installation, paintings, and works on paper) and with diverse approaches, artists Kim Beck, Adam Brent, Emily Henretta, Sangbin IM, McKendree Key, Ward Shelley, and Traci Talasco reflect on the nature of home and the intangible objects, experiences, and memories that constitute our sense of home.

In conjunction with Neo-nomads, curators Anne-Laure Fayard, Baseera Fox Khan and Aileen Wilson host a panel discussion on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 7-9pm at BRIC Rotunda Gallery. Panelists include Uzma Z. Rizvi, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Urban Studies, Critical and Visual Studies, Pratt Institute; Erica Robles, Assistant Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication, New York University; and Cassim Shepard, filmmaker and director of Urban Omnibus, a project of the Architectural League of New York. Each panelist will reflect on the exhibition as it relates to their own field while engaging with the theme and topic of the panel: “Taking, Leaving, Moving: mobility, evocative objects and a sense of home.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog with an essay by curators Anne-Laure Fayard and Aileen Wilson. The catalog is available on request and is free of charge.
