PaulaBarr chelsea, during the High Line Open Studios 2010, will present Life Lies in Diversity featuring the work of six artists: Nicole Castrogiovanni, Jennifer Deppe Parker, Jo-Woo, Joe Kupillas, Susanna Taylor-Neumann, and William Thompson.

M. K. Soni said, "Life lies in diversity, not in monotony." By presenting six artists each delivering their own message through their different types of art, PaulaBarr chelsea celebrates the spirit of diversity.

Nicole Castrogiovanni lives and works between New England and Southern Spain. She holds a BFA,Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and completed an independent project in 2003-2004 at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Cuba. Her work has been regularly exhibited in the US since 2004. Nicole is fascinated by language as the basic forging and fortifying element of the human experience. Her paintings are large-scale, layered applications of acrylic text on wood panel. Her inspiration is drawn upon her experience with the vernacular and the sensorial memories of her own life events. Informed by her relationships and her Methodology for viewing the world, she has a vocabulary of color, which she engages in linking to a vocabulary of language.

Jennifer Deppe Parker is an experienced Art Director. She has been working with a wide variety of companies, and these experiences have given her a wide perspective on the visual communication. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Boston University, with a Minor in Art History. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries and she has won two awards, the Promax Gold award in the Out-Of-Home, Print and Poster category for General, and Content Promotion Consumer Print Ad for the History Channel's "Life After People" campaign (2009) as well as the Best Student Photographer, Boston University (2003). She presents "The Day God Spoke", a series of paintings that illustrate the feeling of being in a natural disaster through abstract images and is approached from the point of view of the victims of each event. The paintings go beyond the study of light and darkness, exploring the emotions and events that occur in each circumstance - viewing them from a more profound perspective than the usual interpretations. This series presents natural disasters from an emotional standpoint, which is rarely highlighted in mainstream media. A piece from this series, "Tornado", has been featured this year by Jonathan Adler in "Happy Chic Accessorizing."

Jo-Woo is a South Korean artist. She has traveled widely from 2001 through 2009, notably in India and Nepal to experiment the intense color of Hindu culture. She has studied sculpture at Kay-Won School of Art & Design Fine Art. She holds a BA in Fine Arts and a M.A. (Painting) from Yong-In University, and an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts (Sculpture) from Visba-Bharati University in India. The theme of her work is Happiness. "What is the criteria for happiness?", she wonders. It is simply herself. Happiness is repeated through such moments as when she hears a bird sing or when she is drawing. Her work has been exhibited in South Korea, India and Nepal.

Joe Kupillas holds a BFA in fine arts from the School of Visual Arts. Since 2003, his work has been widely exhibited in the New York area. Joe is currently producing oil paintings and collages. By working with two unrelated methods, he has to think differently about image making and is expanding his gestural and aesthetic language. The want to express the human experience and the idea of the unconscious are what unify these two processes. He is drawn to the history and language pertaining to painting. Each painting begins with a concept or a poem. The poems are made using the cut up technique. The intentions of his paintings are to convey a thought or feeling. Collage is a very different process: cutting and gluing paper, through which Joe is also working outside of himself. By going through books, magazines and newspapers, he delves into a collective cultural unconscious. By manipulating these pictures, he transforms them into something new. The end result does not necessarily have answers, but the outcome can initiate conversation concerning life and the world in which we live.

Susanna Taylor-Neumann, from Adelaide, Australia, is now living and working in the New York City and Washington D.C. areas. Her art has been successfully exhibited in Australia, and she is now entering the American art world. Her work has also been featured in "Featured Artists"(book), volume III (to be released in December 2010) and "New York Best Models" in August 2010. Susanna often combines simple block colors and cute sculptures to create palatable, playful, yet intriguing works that aim to effectively communicate with the majority. Susanna is a passionate and dedicated artist who also has an interest in fusing visual art with public interaction and activism.

William Thompson holds a BFA from Indiana University and is currently working towards a MFA from Pratt Institute. His work has been exhibited in group shows nation-wide since 1996, and in a solo show this year in Portland. It has also been published this year in a Featured Editorial "A Soldier's Vision" - Oregonian, Portland and in 2008 as a featured artist in Creative Heartworks, On-Line Gallery in Oregon. William has been a member of the US Army and Oregon Army National Guard for over twenty years. His experiences in the military have greatly affected his outlook on life and his art, which has continued to evolve since his return from Iraq in 2005. William presents "A Soldier's Vision", a painting of himself painting a picture of where he would rather be while in combat. Although there is a lot going on in the piece, he hopes that those who see the painting will draw something from the examples of life from a soldier's perspective, and that they can see the human sacrifice of war by the soldiers on both sides and by the innocent civilians caught in the cross-fire.

This exhibition is curated by Assia Bourouah.
