Martos Gallery presents BPM, Scottish-Icelandic artist Baldvin Ringsted’s first solo exhibition in the United States.

Auditory to visual, Baldvin Ringsted finds a delicate transaction that occurs from image to sound and vice versa. Drawing upon his experience as a musician, and a deep interest in pop culture, Ringsted has developed a body of work that deals with the relationship between the two. The artist’s underlying aim, to render sound resonances visible in his works and create images of both the mood and scientific 'shape' of music, is suggested in the exhibition’s title, BPM or ‘beats per minute’. Visual signs of repetition and rhythm are seen in many of his works, including Six Drum-kits and the Divebomb series, where the sound waves are transposed upon the paint’s surface. Rather than producing sound in real time, the works focus on documenting past musical moments. They reflect the artist's effort to capture and communicate to others experiences that are not their own, particularly when dealing with heavy metal.

Born in Akureyri, Iceland, Baldvin Ringsted studied jazz theory at the F.I.H School of Music in Rekyjavik, before moving to Glasgow to complete an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art. Ringsted has exhibited extensively throughout Europe. Recent exhibition locations include Akureyri Art Museum in Iceland, Artnews Projects in Berlin, Kunstverein Arnsberg and Glasgow International.
