"Judith Eisler, Bryn McConnell, Mariah Robertson" Exhibition
Van Doren Waxter
This event has ended.
Curated by Augusto Arbizo. The exhibition brings together three women artists, whose work mines a fertile territory that begins with photography and vacillates towards- and back to- painting, albeit in varying degrees and divergent conceptual premises and formal constructs. The camera– a ubiquitous and democratic invention if there was ever one– becomes, in the work of these artists, a filter for ideas about figuration and abstraction, color and film, mechanical reproduction and the handmade, and as 'smoke and mirror' to contemporary culture's obsession to photograph and digitally record 24/7. Judith Eisler bases her paintings on photographs, which she takes of moving images from auteur films, music videos and documentaries. Bryn McConnell takes as inspiration the printed, glossy pages of fashion magazines, including editorial spreads as well as mass-market advertising campaigns. Mariah Robertson subverts the lens entirely, beginning with a camera and upending mechanical darkroom processes towards an experimental and painterly practice.
