50 Years At Pace is a retrospective exhibition of The Pace Gallery’s contribution to the history of art, celebrating the artists, exhibitions, people, and ideas that have contributed to Pace’s textured history since its inception in 1960. In honor of its golden anniversary, Pace will open its archives to the public, displaying letters, reviews, photos, and publications, as well as some of the key masterpieces that have passed through the gallery. Spanning all four of Pace’s New York locations, the shows will present rare and major loans, including Jasper Johns’ Three Flags (sold to the Whitney via Pace in 1980, breaking the record for a work sold by a living artist); Lucas Samaras’ Mirrored Room; Roy Lichtenstein’s Girl with Ball (MoMA); Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych (Tate), and dozens of masterpieces from private collections.
Each gallery space will highlight a particular aspect of Pace’s history:
32 East 57th Street – Focused recreations of some of Pace’s most significant historical shows, including such seminal exhibitions as Pablo Picasso: The Avignon Paintings (1981); De Kooning/Dubuffet: The Women (1991); Bonnard/Rothko: Color and Light (1997); Mondrian/Reinhardt: Influence and Affinity (1997); The Women of Giacometti (2005); and Picasso, Braque and Early Film in Cubism (2007), among others.
